History
Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue (RRFR) began as a volunteer fire department until the City incorporated in 1981. A Department of Public Safety model (cross-trained police officers, firefighters, and EMTs) was in place until 2007. In July 2007, the Governing Body passed a City ordinance that created the Rio Rancho Police Department and RRFR.

Future
Response to emergency incidents grows about 5% each year. RRFR will continue to grow as the City grows. Future station locations will be identified through a statistical analysis of calls for service. RRFR is continually looking at new programs to better serve our community. The Department has a succession plan in place to help identify and prepare fire personnel to assume leadership roles in the future.
